Having won The Gold Cup at Pontefract earlier in her 3 year old career, it is surprising that The Duchess went off at such a big price because she won the St Leger fairly easily. In a long, outstanding career spanning 33 races, she won 19 and was second on no less than 7 occasions. She won the Doncaster Stakes, Doncaster Club Stakes and repeated her Pontefract Gold Cup success in 1817, won the York Gold Cup in 1818 and the Newcastle Gold Cup in 1819. Over Round 119%
